Mattel Introduces Autistic Barbie

An 18-month partnership with Mattel and ASAN, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, has produced a beautiful new Barbie! The first-ever autistic Barbie doll was created with thoughtful consideration to help represent common ways autistic people may present themselves, process the world, and communicate.

“Barbie has always strived to reflect the world kids see and the possibilities they imagine, and we’re proud to introduce our first autistic Barbie as part of that ongoing work,” said Jamie Cygielman, Global Head of Dolls, Mattel. “The doll, designed with guidance from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, helps to expand what inclusion looks like in the toy aisle and beyond because every child deserves to see themselves in Barbie.”

The doll’s design reflects some experiences that individuals on the autism spectrum may have including stim-friendly elbows and wrists (for happy hand flapping!), a slightly shifted gaze (to reflect how some autistic folks may avoid direct eye contact), AND this Barbie comes with some sweet gear: a pink fidget spinner, noise cancelling headphones, and an AAC device! While this Barbie’s dress may be adorable, it isn’t an itchy or too-tight fabric—no sensory icks, here!
