Just because it’s summer, learning ought not to end. Teach your kids about the summer solstice at farmersalmanac.com/summer-solstice-first-day-summer.

Make a Rainbow

After a storm comes a beautiful rainbow. Don’t toss away those broken crayons too quickly; they can be melted to help create a colorful work of art. Use tape to mask off a design or letters on a canvas. Peel all wrappers off the crayons and have a grown-up apply heat to the crayons using a blow dryer.

Sunny Day Shadows

Grab some chalk and head outside on a sunny day. Kids will love tracing shadow shapes as the day goes by; trace shapes of favorite toys, and also trace some family members who can move into different positions for this exercise. How do the shapes and sizes change from the morning, noon and evening? Part science and part art project, “sunny day shadows” can keep kids busy for hours.
