Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

Parents of kiddos heading to Kindergarten have a checklist of must-do activities before their little ones even steps foot into their classroom. Buy ALL of the school supplies, check in with the pediatrician, the dentist and yes! the eye doctor, too. Having a clean bill of health, a bright smile and healthy eyes is a great way to start off a school career for six year olds. But all children should have their vision screened annually to keep the eye care going–eye health is just that important! Let the busy back-to-school season be your yearly reminder to go ahead and get the appointment on your calendar for your child to have a quick check in with the eye doc… here is the why

+If a student is having trouble seeing, they are more likely to have struggles with learning. Early and continued screenings can catch vision issues, resolve them and keep students’ education on track.

+Eye issues can be an indicator of health issues, even before any other symptoms arise. Diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and high blood pressure/cholesterol all may present initially as a vision disturbance. Be vigilant!

+Whole body health also influences eye health! An eye doctor can review their patients’ whole body well-being to encourage proper health measures such as taking a multi-vitamin, wearing sunglasses and following the 20-20-20 rule when partaking in screen time to avoid eye strain (watching for 20 minutes? Take a break for at least 20 seconds by looking at least 20 feet away).

Now that you know the why, we have also rounded up the where, too. Check out these local eye docs who serve children:
