Temperatures are dropping and will soon drop even more as we head into the winter months. But don’t let the cold keep the kids from enjoying the outdoors! Dress them for the weather, thinking “layers.” Start with a base layer that keeps away moisture (unlike cotton), and add a second layer of fleece or wool. Keep your layers thin when you can, so that your mobility isn’t restricted. Your third layer should help cut the wind, but it should also be water-repellent since your little one is likely to take a tumble in the snow.

If it’s cold enough for a winter jacket, aim for those with vents in the sides. Be sure to look for jackets that Velcro or elastic around the cuffs and hem — it will help keep air out and hold gloves and mittens in place.

Gloves will give your kids more flexibility than mittens, and they shouldn’t need a scarf if their outer layer covers their neck or if they are wearing a “gator” (a looped piece of fleece they can pull over their head). Scarves can have a tendency to unravel and get caught on sleds or tree branches.
