Library Welcomes Award-Winning Author

Author Jacqueline Woodson, whose book Brown Girl Dreaming has won numerous awards, will talk about her memoir at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, in the Reading Garden Lounge at the Main Library (800 Vine St.).

Brown Girl Dreaming tells the story of Woodson’s childhood in mesmerizing verse. During her talk, the author will guide the audiences through the vivid poems from her book, sharing what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow, her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement, and the joy of finding her voice through writing stories, despite the fact that she struggled with reading as a child.

Woodson has won several awards for her books, including the National Book Award, the Coretta Scott King Award, the Newbery Honor and the NAACP Image Award for Brown Girl Dreaming. Her appearance is made possible by the Friends of the Public Library and the Library Programs Fund.

Books will be available for sale, courtesy of Joseph-Beth Booksellers. A book signing will follow the presentation. Call 513-369-6900 or visit
