One of my favorite ways to teach my children math, the importance of following directions, and delayed
gratification is in the kitchen, through baking! Baking provides the opportunity to follow directions by
following a recipe, math through measuring ingredients and delayed gratification by watching time
elapse while our treats bake. Normally, I have to spend time looking for a recipe and supporting my kids
during baking, but Baketivity provides the recipe for you, plus the recipe is broken down enough that my kids
can follow it independently.
Baketivity provides clearing labeled and measured ingredients and defined directions on making the
treat. Each step not only has typed directions, but also has visual supports. On top of the visual supports,
all ingredients are color-coded in the directions and the color coordinates with the stickers on the
ingredients! This provided a great opportunity for my kids to work on their matching skills while
baking, and it also provided my husband and I the opportunity to step farther away from them and
give them more independence. However, the directions also provided visual cues for when they
needed to ask for adult support from my husband or myself!
My kids did a great job working together (hello collaboration practice!) and preparing their cupcake mix.
Once it was ready to bake, they asked my husband to stick it in the oven for them. While they patiently
waited for their cupcakes to bake and cool, they entertained themselves by reading the Educational
Activity booklet that came in our Baketivity kit. They then enjoyed sharing facts about twig insects,
ladybugs, beetles and fire ants with me as we received the Bug Cupcake Baketivity Kit! It was perfect timing as the weather is warming up so we can take more nature hikes to look for the bugs they learned!
Once the cupcakes cooled, they followed the directions and made their own Bug Cupcakes! Once they
finished decorating all of their cupcakes, they requested a before dinner dessert, which we approved!
My son took a big bite and said, “This is the best hard work I have tasted!” My daughter didn’t say much,
but the frosting on her face told me that she enjoyed the process from beginning to end.
