Looking for a fun night out with your family or friends? Check out roller derby with the Cincinnati Rollergirls or the Black-n-Bluegrass Roller Girls! My husband and I, along with some friends, recently attended the Cincinnati Rollergirls home opener. The Cincinnati Rollergirls are in their twelfth season and their second year playing games at Schmidt Memorial Fieldhouse at Xavier University.

After parking, we made the short walk to the fieldhouse, savoring the delicious scent of the food the entire walk. Once we got closer to the fieldhouse, we realized that the food we were smelling was from the food truck parked outside of the fieldhouse … perfect for hungry kids and parents! Once we made it inside, we located a spot for us all to sit as tickets are for open seating.

The full contact, faced paced roller derby is not a sport that we were familiar with, but luckily cheat sheets were handed out early, so we were able to quickly read a bit about the roles of the pivot, blockers and jammer and how the jammer scores points! We quickly found ourselves cheering for our home team! Adults and kids were cheering and I know my kids will enjoy watching Wooly Bully, the mascot, dance when we take them to their first roller derby match on April 7!

Live in Northern Kentucky?  Then catch a bout with the Black-n-Bluegrass Roller Girls!  This skater-owned league is a member of The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and participates in a number of charitable fundraising efforts.  Coming up on April 21, the team will lend their support to the Family Nurturing Center and their mission to end the cycle of child abuse.  Cheer them on as they battle with the Terrorz Roller Derby team from Columbus at 5 p.m.  Learn more at black-n-bluegrass.com
