This fun recipe for a cake that looks like a pizza was submitted by mom Julie Engelhardt and won her an award at a local fair!
Ingredients
- 1 box white cake mix
- Eggs, oil, and water, as directed by cake mix instructions
For Toppings
- 1 can of ready made vanilla frosting
- One jar of red food coloring paste
- 1 sheet of red fruit leather (cherry or strawberry)
- One bar of white chocolate
- One bag of black licorice
- One box of chocolate covered raisins
- Three Ferrer Rocher hazelnut candies, halved
Directions
For the pizza crust, use a regular white box cake mix and make following package directions. Use a 10 inch pizza pan liberally greased with cooking spray. Starting in the middle of the pan, slowly pour the batter until it spreads out to the sides of the pizza pan, and use about half to 3/4 of the batter. If you use all the batter, the ‘crust’ will be too heavy and break. Use the remaining batter for cupcakes. Bake the cake according to directions. Let cool completely.
Once cool, it’s time to decorate! You can leave the cake on the pizza pan, or go to a local pizza restaurant and ask for a large pizza box. Put parchment paper inside the box and carefully slide the pizza cake into the box.
Decorating
Open the can of white chocolate and mix in red food coloring until achieving a deep red color. Mix all the way through so there are no white streaks.
Put four tablespoons full of red frosting into a microwave proof cup, and microwave for ten seconds, or until frosting is liquidy. Take out of microwave, and gently poor the frosting, starting in the middle. If frosting doesn’t spread out, use the back of a spoon to distribute. If not enough frosting, repeat by putting some in a cup and microwaving. Spread frosting out to about one inch from the edge of the cake. This will be your ‘crust.’
Next, grate the white chocolate then sprinkle over the red frosting ‘sauce.’ Cover, but make sure red is still visible. Take the red fruit leather, keeping it on the plastic wrap, and using a small circular cookie cutter, cut out ‘pepperoni’ pieces. Place those firmly into the ‘sauce.’ Next, take one or two pieces of licorice and cut with kitchen scissors to make circular “olives.” Take the chocolate covered raisins and spread around to make ‘sausage,’ and then take the hazel nut candies, cut in half, and place on the crust to represent meatballs. Close box, and serve!
