My oldest enjoys participating in all things gross motor, but he also really enjoys sitting down and creating art. I also enjoy art and crafting, so recently on one of our mother/son dates, we went to Mad Potter in Mason.

It was a nice change from our usual go, go, go schedule. I was a bit nervous of all of the breakables at Mad Potter, so on our drive there we discussed some of the things he would find and how we must look with our eyes and not with our hands until we found the piece we wanted to paint.

My son did great! He knew what his expectations were when we entered. He quietly walked around with me looking at the different pieces. Mad Potter has plates, seasonal items, mugs, and more! We finally both decided on painting plates. I decided on a dinner plate for a gift and my son decided on a plate shaped like a football.

Mad Potter was very easy to navigate. The aprons, paint, and supplies were easy to locate and access ourselves. My son picked a table and then decided on the colors he wanted to paint his plate. Not only did we enjoy painting together, but it was a great just to sit and talk. We talked about our painting “plan” and what we envisioned for our plates. We talked about sports, food, LEGO’s, you name it! It was relaxing and a great bonding activity. When he was done painting he wanted to take his plate home with him that day. I realized I didn’t explain to him that we had to leave our projects for a week. It was a great opportunity for me to teach him about kiln’s and how our plates would look nice and shiny in a week when they were complete. He decided he wanted the kiln to work its “magic” on his plate. We both had a fantastic time. We will definitely be visiting Mad Potter again soon!

At Mad Potter, you pay a studio fee which is $8 for adults and $6 for kids age 12 and under (limit 2 pieces per studio fee). This covers all your painting, glazing and firing. You pay for the pottery pieces individually and these range from about $5 to $40.
