I love to sew. Loved it ever since my days spending the night on the farm with my great-granny and digging through her sewing kits and extra fabric. I would spend hours perfecting a little ruffle collar … for her dog. I loved learning more and more … especially when it came to the Home Ed class. We made a few things in there, but we used a sewing machine. Sewing with just a needle and thread is a little harder, time consuming, but fun.
So, it was no surprise to me when out of the blue my daughter wanted to learn how to sew. It really started with my husband. One night, he had found that his favorite pair of pants had gained a hole in the pocket. I wasn’t home, so he took that moment to give our daughter her first lesson in sewing. She fixed his pants and was so proud of herself. It grew from there. Then, she got the Sew Cool Sewing Machine. It was more of a no-sew kind of thing. But, it sparked her interest and she wanted to learn how to sew for real. So, one day, we took a couple of old socks and made some sock monsters. I showed her step-by-step how to sew a seam. She was right on from the beginning. She knew what to do and she kept going with it.
Day after day, she comes to me asking if she can cut up this old shirt to make something or if I had any extra fabric or old pillow cases she could use. One day, we didn’t have any more thread, so we used a stapler. LOL. We made a bathing suit for her American Girl doll. I finally just went to the store and bought an inexpensive travel sewing kit. She squealed with delight! I had no idea she would be so interested in sewing things. Just this past weekend she made a super hero mask for her little brother, a cape and more. Hours went by while she was quietly in her room making things. I couldn’t have been any happier to see her new-found hobby taking flight.
And to think, it all started with a little moment with her daddy needing something to be fixed. Who knows. If we start allowing our kids to help with little things around the house, it could spark an interest in a new hobby for them.
