Boone County Public Library is excited to present a free Check it Out: Yoga Day on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m. where the first 150 people will receive a free yoga mat, water bottle, pedometer, and more. Sessions for kids and beginning adults start at 10:30 a.m. with classes on intermediate yoga, tai chi, meditation, and Thai massage following throughout the morning and afternoon.
“Yoga is growing in popularity with individuals, but also with parents who wish to create fun and healthy ways to spend quality time with their children,” said Youth Services Coordinator Amanda Hopper. “It can be a positive and playful way for families to connect. Physical inactivity in children and adults is a growing concern in our state and our nation.”
Earlier this year, the Library, in partnership with the Boone County Community Education Council, received a Join the Fun grant from Interact for Health to fund several active living events throughout the county in addition to creating exercise kits that can be checked out from the Library. The goal of the entire initiative is to encourage families to get active and exercise together. On average, 23% of Boone County residents do not participate in a physical activity in a given month, 25% of residents are obese, and 63% of residents are overweight. Additionally, Kentucky has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the nation at 38.2%.
The final active living event will take place in December at the R.C. Durr YMCA in Burlington. Other local partners include Boone County Parks, City of Florence, R.C. Durr YMCA, World of Golf, and Boone County Schools. For a complete schedule of classes and events, visit www.bcpl.org.
