What is the camp’s mission and philosophy?

“To unleash the potential in all through enriching outdoor experiences”. 

We are passionate about our ‘kids and guest first philosophy’, ensuring memorable experiences while always prioritizing safety.

What safety measures are in place?

Our campers at YMCA Camp Kern are always supervised by our staff. Guests and visitors register and are escorted by our staff when campers are on-site.

What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?

Our cabin groups are up to 10 campers with 2 staff. During open field games the ratios grow bigger, ensuring that staff supervision is maintained at all times.

How are staff members screened and trained?

Every staff member is background checked, including the national sex offender data base. We conduct two weeks of on-site training for our staff, along with 8h worth of virtual trainings.

Is there a daily schedule, and can you provide an example?

Days start at 7am and end at 10pm. Campers have four one-hour activities. After dinner they have choice activities and an evening program. Before bed, camper groups have evening reflection.

Are there opportunities for free play or downtime?

Every day we have a rest hour right after lunch, and after dinner we have a free choice activity including art, field games, sports, gaga ball, etc.

How does the camp handle health issues and allergies?

Our health team goes through the camper’s health forms and communicates with parents if more information is needed or if any issues arise. Our kitchen adjusts to specific dietary requirements.

Are there opportunities for parents to visit or participate in camp activities?

We discourage parents to visit camp during summer camp activity hours. However, we offer off season family camp options for those who want to enjoy camp as a family unit.
