Axolotls at the Aquarium
Families visiting the Newport Aquarium may notice some new friends during their next excursion to the local attraction. After venturing over to Gator Alley’s, be sure to say, “Hello” to the newest aquatic salamander set residents…Axolotls!
What makes these amphibians so unique?
- They are regenerative. In fact, they are one of few animals on Earth to be regenerative, which means they can grow new organs and limbs. Lose a leg under a log?? No problem for a Axolotl who would just grow a new one. Pretty cool!
- Axolotls can breathe from their lungs AND their gills. Kind of like being ambidextrous, but for breathing. Haha!
- They have such playful smiles, but you will never catch an Axolotl winking (or blinking!) at you because they don’t have eyelids. 😉
- Kids love seeing them in the game Minecraft!!
