Calling all young artists! The Carnegie has opened registration for early fall and fall/winter Scripps Howard ArtStop Artist Series Workshops for children ages 7-12. Parents with children interested in performing on stage, creating a masterpiece, or making movies won’t want to miss these fun after-school classes kicking off in September and November respectively.

Taught by local teaching artists, Scripps Howard ArtStop Artist Series workshops offer a wide range of arts classes throughout the year covering everything from dance, drama, music, visual art and more. Workshops being offered during the fall sessions include:

Early Fall Workshops

Broadway Boogie – Dance

Wednesdays, 4-5pm

Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28 & Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26

Jazz, Tap, Ballroom, Hip Hop. You can see it all on Broadway. In this class, learn to develop larger than life characters while exploring the diverse and energetic styles of broadway dance. Bring us those dancing feet!

Class Fee: $20 per 8 week session

 

Stealing the Scene – Drama

Wednesdays, 5:15-6:15pm

Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28 & Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26

Good actors are good observers of human nature. In this class, you will take inspiration from the people you see and conversations you hear everyday, in order to develop authentic characters and scenes. Stop, look, and listen…theatre is all around you.

Class Fee: $20 per 8 week session

 

Trading Card Games – 2-D Visual 

Thursdays, 4-5:30pm

Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29 & Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27

Have you caught the Pokemon bug yet? Are you a big fan of magic? Join us in designing and drawing your own trading card game. Explore gameplay mechanics and a variety of illustrating and printmaking methods to develop a wacky collectable card game that the whole class can trade and play.

Class Fee: $30 per 8 week session

 

Fall/Winter Workshops

Dancing on the Globe – Dance

Wednesdays, 4-5pm

Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30 & Dec. 7, 14 & Jan. 4, 11

Explore world cultures through the lens of dance. This class will have you traveling around the world and sampling local snacks, in order to create dances inspired by the region. Get your passport and dancing shoes and join us in Africa, South America, Asia, and more!

Class Fee: $20 per 8 week session

 

Hide Behind Your Mask – Visual & Drama

Wednesdays, 5:15-6:15pm

Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30 & Dec. 7, 14 & Jan. 4, 11

From superheroes to commedia dell arte, masks play an important role in expressing character while concealing the person beneath. In this class, not only will you create your own mask, you will also learn to freely communicate emotion and character through full body movement. Take comfort hiding behind your mask and go wild!

Class Fee: $20 per 8 week session

 

Tiny Town – 3-D Visual 

Thursdays, 4-5:30pm

Nov. 3, 10, 17 & Dec. 1, 8, 15 & Jan. 5, 12

Dream up your perfect city. Now let’s build it. In this class, enjoy creating miniature city buildings from cardboard, paper, and found objects. Using a variety of sculptural methods, create banks, bookstores, zoos, office workers, aliens on surfboards, you name it. It is your town, it’s all up to you!

Class Fee: $30 per 8 week session

Scripps Howard ArtStop Artist Series workshops take place in The Carnegie’s Eva G. Farris Education Center. Workshops take place once a week for eight weeks, and end with a culminating experience for friends and family. Cost to participate varies based on workshop. Participants registering for more than one workshop per quarter will receive a $10 discount. Class size is limited and registration is required.
