Does you child have a few extra pounds? A lot of extra pounds? Limit junk food, say experts. But as you know, it’s easier said than done. Lori A. Breaux, M.D. of Brentwood Pediatrics shares some tips for this:
• Teach your child to check nutrition labels on food — empowering them is a great step toward their own self care. Show him how to look for the number of calories but also fats, carbohydrates and sodium per serving.
• Encourage healthier eating as opposed to dieting. Serve more vegetables, less starch.
• Engage in physical activity. Kids should have vigorous activity at least five days a week! Start with 10 – 15 minutes a day and work up to 30.
• Remember that as your child learns to make healthier choices, her body will follow.
