Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve (3455 Poole Road) is a hidden treasure off of Colerain Avenue that many people may drive by each day without even realizing it is there! This small nature preserve boasts big activities. For example, this past weekend it hosted Maple Sugar Days. There were demonstrations of how trees are tapped and how sap is boiled down to a thick syrup that everyone enjoys on their pancakes. Naturalists led walking tours explaining the process and kids got to try out tapping and sample different grades of syrup and other tasty treats inside of the historic Ellenwood Barn. My 3-year old walked away from the event knowing that syrup comes from trees, not the grocery.

In addition to Maple Sugar Days, Glenwood Gardens (10397 Springfield Pike) is hosting a special Maple Sugar program just for kids at the Highfield Discovery Garden now March 11.

Farbach-Werner has a small paved walking path and butterfly garden. Also, there are a number of special programs hosted in the old barn. Some to be noted are Yoga After Work on Tuesdays, Painted Pots Week in April, a kid friendly Mother’s Day craft in May, and Frog Week at the end of May as a kick off to different animal themed weeks throughout the summer.
