Some women simply can’t bear the heat — but you can’t just “get out of the kitchen” when you’re pregnant! What to do to make hot days just a bit more bearable.

It’s hard enough being pregnant sometimes, but summer pregnancies can be downright stifling! Here are some quick tips to keep you from melting from Summer Pregnancy: A Guide to Coping with Pregnancy in Warm Weather by Carolyn Stone:

1. Take cool showers
Water cools and can help with swelling. If you can spend time in a pool it will be wonderful to wallow. Try cool showers in the evening to help you relax before bed.

2. Seek shade
Sun exposure doesn’t pose any more of a risk than usual, but it’s obviously cooler in the shade.

3. Drink more water
Some doctors estimate that pregnant women need an extra two to four glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. (In extreme cases dehydration can cause contractions and even preterm labor.) Keep a water bottle with you at all times. If you have a hard time drinking water, add a flavor packet or some fresh lemon.

4. Avoid unnecessary changes in body temperature
Too many trips between the A/C and outdoors on a really steamy day forces your body to work extra hard to adjust to the spikes and falls in temperature. If you’re going to be outside for a while, wear light, breathable clothing and a hat.

5. Put your feet up
Swollen legs and feet tend to happen even more quickly when it’s really hot outside. Wear comfy, cool shoes and when possible, rest your feet on an ottoman!
