Camps are held at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
Week 1 | The AACs of Art (guest artist)
June 10 – 14
School’s out for the summer, and Camp’s moving in – to AAC! Celebrate AAC’s 150 years of art education in this foundational, fantastic first week of Camp! Campers will learn the fundamentals of artistic disciplines like drawing, painting, printing, and sculpting while having fun with the styles and mediums of AAC alumni, from Charley Harper’s illustrated animals to the album covers and children’s book of James Flora and Tom Wesselman’s pop art collages.
Week 2 | Art Lab (field trip)
June 17 – 21
Art goes into the laboratory in this scientifically-inspired week! Campers will use a variety of materials to practice the creativity, innovation, and skills that enable great creations and inventions. We’ll examine the work of people who combined science and art in outstanding ways – from the cyanotypes of Anna Atkins to Audobon’s wildlife illustrations and Calder’s mobiles and stabiles – while creating our own botanical artworks, aquatic watercolors, flying machines, mobiles, and more!
Week 3 | Paint the Town Orange… (field trip)
June 24 – 28
And blue, yellow, purple, and red – this week is all about exploring pop and contemporary art! Campers will study artists and techniques like Pollock and his drips and splatters, Rauschenberg’s hybrid paintings and collages, Cincinnati-local Jim Dine’s sculpture, and more, while breaking artistic boundaries to create their own pop art masterpieces!
Week 4 | USA Road Trip! (field trip)
July 8 – 12
Camp packs up for a classic American adventure in this road trip-themed week! We’ll take in beautiful landscapes, stop at a county fair, create roadside attractions inspired by the likes of the Porter Sculpture Park and the House on the Rock, and make unique maps to chart our travels. Campers will work in the style of master American artists like Mark Rothko, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Cy Twombly as we explore the depth and variety of American art from sea to shining sea!
Week 5 | Rock Me Amadeus (guest artist)
July 15 – 19
Feel the rhythm of this musical week of Camp! We’ll dance in the footsteps of artists inspired by music, like Kandinski, Picasso, and Klee, and harmonize with works of art that inspired music themselves, such as “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” and “The Starry Night.” Campers will explore the connections between art and music through a variety of mediums, creating lyrical drawings, musical sculptures, artistic instruments, and more!
Week 6 | Cartoon Your World (guest artist)
July 22 – 26
Campers will bring their imaginations to life in this animated final week of Camp! We’ll explore cartooning, animation, and illustration styles from across the world and throughout history. From classic western comics to Japanese anime and manga, Campers will learn a range of techniques to create distinctive, unique characters and the worlds they inhabit! Top it all off with a visit from an experienced comic artist and this week of Camp is sure to be one for the (comic) books!
